Mexico says the leader of the feared Zetas drug cartel has been been killed in a firefight with soldiers in the northern Mexican border state of Coahuila. But hours after the announcement on Tuesday, a group of armed men raided the funeral home where Heriberto Lazcano’s body was lying and snatched the corpse, officials said. “A masked, armed group overpowered the personnel, took the bodies and forced the owner of the funeral home to drive the get-away vehicle,” Homero Ramos, Coahuila’s state prosecutor, told a news conference. The navy said fingerprints taken from the body before the corpse was taken away have matched the records of Lazcano, known as El Lazca, confirming his death. The last execution by hanging in Ireland took place 67 years ago today, on 20 April 1954 when 25 year old Michael Manning was executed. 67 years ago today, on April 20, 1954, a chapter in Irish legal history closed when Michael Manning, a 25-year-old carter from Limerick, became the 29th and last person to be legally executed in Ireland.  He had raped and murdered Catherine Cooper (65) who worked at Barrington’s Hospital, in Limerick, in February 1953.  He was found by the Gardai (police) because he had left a distinctive hat at the scene of the crime and was found with the yellow beret his victim had been wearing.  Manning’s headpiece was, as Dermot Walsh described in his book on the case, Beneath Cannock’s Clock, a “Mountie hat”.  It had a high conical shape, pinched into panes at the tip, and was otherwise known as a Baden Powell hat after the founder of the scouting movement. Sawing in the half was an incredibly cruel execution method, used mostly in the Medieval Europe. During the process, the criminal would be hung upside-down from a tree or gallows, and a large saw would be then used to slice his or her body in half, starting with the crotch, all the way to the chest and head.  While some victims were cut completely in half, most of them were only sliced up to their abdomen, prolonging their agony. Because the victims were hung upside-down, the brain was receiving sufficient bloodflow to keep them alive and concious until the saw finally reached the main arteries in the abdomen.  In extreme cases, the execution could last several hours.
